Science & Technology ArticlesThe History Of SEOBy: chetna sharma, Fri Jun 4th, 2010 SEO, or Search Engine Optimization is a trend on the internet that has gathered attention due to the importance of search engine giants like Google, Yahoo and MSN. SEO is a very important factor for most web businesses since it aims at helping websites reach the ‘front pages’ in search results. The keywords that target audience use are studied and so are the algorithms behind popular search engines so that the typical keywords would bring the SEO clients’ website in the top results. The history of SEO dates way back from 1995. This is when the popular search engines of today like Yahoo were just born. The internet was relatively small and thus it was simpler to find information through use of search engines available then. The concept of ‘optimization’ of sites back then was as simple as submitting one’s URL to the search engine who would send its ‘spiders’ to crawl through the site and find information to show up for later search results. However, within a couple years, as the internet grew more and search engine competition too, there was a need for further research into how one could get their site ranked up higher than the rest of the internet competition. Webmasters began studying the algorithms that were behind search engines that made particular sites show in the search results higher up. Soon enough, with near accuracy, sites could appear in the top results at the will of the webmasters. This was an important part in the history of SEO growth. Those with the knowledge of these algorithmic workings were very important to online businesses now. However, the abuse of search engines was inevitable as webmasters simply started making use of keyword density to make their client sites rank higher. By 1998, the trend of outsmarting SEO experts began as search engines also looked into factors other than keyword density. As the years have passed by, search engines have employed smarter techniques and algorithms that have made it nearly impossible to go higher up in results purely by relying on the ‘high keyword density’ trick.
